This painting began around 1986 when my oldest sister had an assignment for her high school art class. She was tasked with creating an acrylic painting on a canvas she stretched herself. As a model, she decided to use a photograph my father took of me when I was a little kid playing in the leaves. She never finished the painting. During the summer of 2013, my parents brought the incomplete painting to my house when they came to visit. I decided to try to finish the painting as a project. I didn't have the original photograph to work from, so I had to use a school photo of myself from around that age and images of leaf piles from the internet. During the project, I learned a bit more about how things lay against each other and how to mesh that into a realistic perspective. I also learned that my smile is crooked! I suppose it's the little quirks and flaws that build our character and make us who we are. So enjoy the painting that was almost 30 years in the making and the honesty of a crooked smile.

I made this as a bridal shower gift for a friend. After my wedding, I was amazed at how much I had to rush through and I felt that I hadn't been able to fully appreciate the day and the days leading up to and following the actual event. My goal was to give this chest with a number of boxes and satchels inside that would need to be filled during those days that I had rushed through. Hopefully, trying to fill these packages would help my friend and her fiancee slow down and truly enjoy their time. The exterior of the chest was painted to copy the wedding invitations. I altered the coloring so the night sky was less green than in the invitations and more blue to better match the wedding colors. A latch was connected to allow a small padlock to be utilized to ensure the safety of the contents for as long as the couple needed. The items requested by the couple to complete the capsule included letters to each other, letters to themselves, a gift to each other, a gift to themselves and mementos that would be collected throughout the wedding process. I included envelopes, stationary, small, burlap sacks and jewelry boxes.
